Happy National Interprofessional Health Care Month

The National Academies of Practice proclaim the month of April as "National Interprofessional Health Care Month." Many healthcare professionals recognize that interprofessional education is the most effective way health care professionals learn with, from, and about one another to improve collaboration and the quality of care for individuals, families, and communities. Collaborative interprofessional practice occurs when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, caregivers, and communities to address the local health care need to deliver the highest quality care. We can all agree that the collective work from all health care providers leads to better health outcomes for all.

Interprofessional health care teams are necessary to provide the quality of care that everyone deserves. The complexity of quality health care, including health promotion and illness prevention, becomes more achievable with the support and varied knowledge and skills of members of the interprofessional team. Health care clinicians collaborating in an interprofessional team enhances not only coordination, but safe, effective, and high quality health care.

Nurses and therapists have the responsibility to work with and learn from other health care providers and personnel. We are in positions to reach out to all involved in care, and are responsible for providing resources to promote the health and wellbeing of patients, families, communities, and populations. It is vital that we take the role of initiating and maintaining interprofessional communication and collaboration to effectively promote learning and health.

Promoting interprofessional practice involves establishing clear communication, fostering mutual respect through shared goals, and creating an environment of trust and collaboration. This can be achieved by implementing shared care plans, holding multidisciplinary rounds, encouraging active listening and open feedback, and designing shared training and break spaces.

Improve communication

  • Active and engaged listening: Encourage team members to listen carefully to understand different perspectives.
  • Clear and concise language: Avoid jargon and ensure all communication is easy to understand.
  • Encourage open dialogue: Foster an environment where team members feel comfortable asking questions and seeking clarification.
  • Use technology: Implement tools like electronic messaging and photo sharing to overcome physical barriers.

Foster mutual respesct and trust

  • Recognize expertise: Acknowledge and respect the unique contributions of each team member.
  • Shared training: Develop shared training programs that help team members understand different roles and perspectives.
  • Promote shared spaces: Create common break areas where different professionals can interact informally.
  • Empathy: Encourage team members to show empathy and understanding for one another's roles and challenges.

Implement collaborative strategies

  • Develop shared care plans: Create collaborative plans that combine all aspects of a patient's care and include patients and their families.
  • Hold multidisciplinary rounds: Conduct regular meetings where different providers can discuss patient goals and coordinate care.
  • Use shared decision-making: Involve all relevant team members in the decision-making process for patient care.
  • Establish shared goals: Ensure all team members are aligned on the objectives for patient care.

Strengthen team dynamics

  • Give and receive feedback: Create a culture of giving and receiving constructive feedback to improve processes.
  • Address conflict: Equip teams with the skills to resolve conflicts and address challenges collaboratively.
  • Empower team members: Delegate tasks and empower all members to contribute their skills and knowledge.
  • Reflect on performance: Regularly review and reflect on team performance to identify areas for improvement.

During the month of April, focus your practice on promoting interprofessional communication and collaboration. The goal is that your initiation of interprofessional practice will continue throughout your profession, thus enhancing quality of care for all. Happy National Interprofessional Health Care Month!
